The Arizona Expansion
ASM International, the Dutch semiconductor equipment maker that controls over 55 percent of the ALD market segments it competes in, is investing more than $320 million in a new campus in Scottsdale, Arizona. The facility is slated for completion by 2026 and will serve as a global innovation hub for atomic layer deposition and epitaxy technologies.
Scottsdale's city council approved the development agreement, and construction is underway on a 21-acre site south of Loop 101 at Scottsdale Road. The investment builds on ASM's 40-year presence in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Facility Details
The 250,000-square-foot facility will house advanced R&D labs focused on ALD technologies critical for chip production. ASM anticipates creating more than 500 new jobs at the site, bringing its total Arizona workforce to approximately 1,300 by 2030.
The campus will pursue LEED certification, with a water recycling system targeting 80 percent reclaimed water use—a significant consideration in Arizona's arid climate. The design reflects growing customer expectations that equipment suppliers demonstrate environmental responsibility throughout their operations.
ALD Market Dominance
ASM holds the leading position in ALD equipment, with a market share exceeding 55 percent in its target segments. ALD now represents more than half of ASM's total equipment revenue, driven by the explosion in ALD steps required at advanced logic and memory nodes.
The company's tools are installed at every major foundry and memory manufacturer, including TSMC, Samsung, Intel, SK hynix, and Micron. As these customers ramp 2nm logic and next-generation 3D NAND, ASM's order book has expanded correspondingly.
Supply Chain Strategy
The Arizona expansion is part of a broader manufacturing diversification strategy. ASM also manufactures ALD equipment in South Korea and the Netherlands. The multi-site approach provides flexibility in the face of ongoing U.S.-China trade tensions and export control restrictions on semiconductor equipment.
ASM has prepared multiple supply chain contingency plans that allow it to shift production between its European, Korean, and U.S. facilities depending on geopolitical conditions and customer requirements.
Growth Outlook
ASM expects its addressable market to grow at 10 to 14 percent annually through 2027. The Arizona facility positions the company to capture a significant share of that growth by locating R&D and manufacturing capacity close to major U.S. customers, including Intel's expanding Arizona fab complex and TSMC's Arizona operations.
